All You Need to Know About Glaucoma: Types, Symptoms, and Natural Ayurvedic Treatments

In this blog, you will learn: What is Glaucoma? And learn about glaucoma symptoms and types, and most importantly, ayurvedic treatments for glaucoma.

Glaucoma (increased intraocular tension) is a medical condition that damages the optic nerve. Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve. Damage is caused by intraocular (eye) pressure. Glaucoma can affect anyone at any age, but it is most common in people over 60.

Symptoms of Glaucoma:

Symptoms of glaucoma include gradual loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light. However, the early stages of glaucoma usually have no noticeable symptoms, and the only way to diagnose glaucoma is with a regular eye exam for early detection.

Glaucoma, if left untreated for a long time, can lead to blindness or vision loss. So an early diagnosis is important.

There are several types of glaucoma. They are,

  • Open-Angle Glaucoma:

It is the most common type of glaucoma that affects patients for the rest of their lives. The optic nerve is damaged when the drainage canal of the eye becomes blocked. Over 90% of glaucoma cases are caused by this condition.

  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma (also known as narrow-angle glaucoma) is the second-most common form of glaucoma. This type causes increased pressure within the eye due to fluid drainage. The angle between the iris and retina is closed in many areas. Acute-angle closure glaucoma requires immediate medical care.

  • Normal Tension Glaucoma

When the optic nerve is injured, even when the pressure is not too high on the eye, it is called low-tension glaucoma. Normal Tension Glaucoma's cause is unknown.

Glaucoma treatment in Ayurveda:

Glaucoma is a very sensitive condition that is as difficult to diagnose as it is to treat. Certain treatments are followed in Ayurveda to cure glaucoma. They are like this.

  1. Herbal medicine
  2. Suggesting a change in diet
  3. Yoga and meditation

Herbal Remedies: Certain herbs such as triphala, punarnava, and ginkgo biloba are believed to have potential benefits for eye health. Our doctor will prescribe you Ayurvedic medicines made using these. This improves your eyesight.

Dietary changes: A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamin A, and omega-3 fatty acids is often recommended. Doing so also helps the eyes gain vision.

Yoga and meditation: Eye exercises and relaxation techniques can be prescribed to manage stress and improve blood circulation. This improves eye health.
